At this event organized by KAPDEM, we examined the shifting balance of power in the international system and the transformation of the global trade order within a comprehensive framework.
We jointly evaluated the economic implications of debates on a multipolar world, along with the historical background and recent developments of the global trading system. In the program, which we held with the participation of Dr. Şahin Yaman, former negotiator of Türkiye at the World Trade Organization, we explored the formation process of the global economic architecture starting from the Bretton Woods system established under U.S. leadership after World War II. We discussed the institutional foundations of the trading system within the framework of the dollar system, the international financial structure, and the political economy of global oil markets.
The event also focused on the rise of Asia and the increasing role of the Asia-Pacific region in the global economy. We assessed the impact of China’s rise, regional integration initiatives, and formations such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) on the global trading system. We discussed how great power competition is reflected in trade rules, supply chains, and international relations. Dr. Yaman’s experiences and anecdotes from the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiation processes provided an insider perspective on the organization’s functioning and the structural challenges it faces, while also allowing us to examine Türkiye’s position within the evolving global economic order.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in and contributed to our event, which was organized in collaboration with the Mülkiye Society of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics.
